A Dictionary of the Bible Comprising its Antiquities, Biography, Geography and Natural History Edited by William Smith 3 Volumes (Complete) 1863 - London - John Murray 9.25 by 6 , 1176 [cxvi], 1008,1862pp. DETAILS Three volumes bound in vellum with leather titles, complete with thumbnail illustrations. An early edition of this comprehensive work. A complete dictionary of the bible from Aalar to the Zuzims makes this an extremely useful reference guide for any biblical scholar. This set previously belonged to Caroli Sarolea and contains his armorial bookplate. CONDITION The bindings are tight and firm with the boards and all internal pages securely attached. There is some wear to the extremities including some marks and yellowing to the vellum. The initials A.H.D.A. have been stamped on the covers in gilt. Internally the pages are clean and bright with the occasional brown spot and the odd handling mark. There is a neat inscription on the reverse of the front endpaper and a signature at the top of the title page on the first volume only. There is a stamp, withdrawn from stock on the blank endpaper of each volume and some rubbing to the endpapers as if something had been stuck on and removed.
